Kinship sets sail

Updated: Jun 22, 2023

The 10m x 3m charcoal drawing on a real canvas sail has be launched at Southampton City Gallery as part of the Creative Connections Southampton exhibition.

The opening night of the exhibition had 300 guests including the National Portrait Gallery team, The City Gallery, Cantell pupils and staff, and the Head of Southampton City Council.

This contemporary maritime twist on the iconic Picasso Guernica painting fills one whole wall of the gallery. The exhibition shows a collection of portraits of Southampton people curated by the pupils from Cantell School who have worked with the artist and gallery education team. The free exhibition is open until October 2023 and is wonderful insight to the city's local history and abundant culture, and her future stars.

The Kinship drawing includes portraits of some of the pupils who workshoped with Pete on drawing in charcoal. The artworks on loan from the NPG and SCG are exhibited alongside the pupils work who curated the exhibition to reflect their city in 2023.
